Wal-Mart History
Wal-Mart is the largest grocery retailer in the United States. It was founded by Sam Walton in 1945 after borrowing capital from his father-in-law. Walton purchased a Ben Franklin store in Newport, Arkansas. The entrepreneur focused on selling goods at the lowest price possible.
He was eventually rewarded, as his store became the top Ben Franklin franchise in the state in less than four years. His secret was simple. He negotiated directly with the producers of goods, instead of following the pricing guidelines set by the parent company of Ben Franklin. This way, he was able to sell his products at very low prices.
But Walton lost the lease on his Newport store. That setback proved to be the springboard to greater success for the entrepreneur. Determined, he opened a new Ben Franklin store in Bentonville, Ark. which he called “Walton’s Five and Dime.”
In just two years, Walton was able to open another store in Fayetteville. By 1962, he was the largest franchise owner of Ben Franklin stores in the United States with 16 outlets under his watch. During the same year, he also opened the first Wal-Mart discount store in Rogers, Ark.
Wal-Mart Growth and Development
In 1969, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. was incorporated. By the turn of the new decade, it had nearly 40 stores with 1,500 employees and sales of more than $40 million. There was no stopping the company’s growth and soon it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
By the time that Wal-Mart debuted on the NYSE, it was already operating in five states. Apart from Arkansas, it had outlets in Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. When it opened a shop in Texas in 1975, the company had 125 stores and 7,500 employees.
It was also during the same year that Walton introduced the Wal-Mart cheer. Taught to and recited by Wal-Mart employees, the cheer emphasizes that the customer is always the top priority of Wal-Mart personnel.
In 1979, the company’s sales hit the milestone mark of $1 billion. It had 276 stores and 21,000 personnel by then. What was impressive was that the company reached the milestone in only 17 years making it the quickest firm to do so.
But Walton was never media-friendly and his insistence to remain in Bentonville instead of having a headquarters in bigger markets made the company’s success relatively unknown to the public. In the next decade, the company’s expansion was rapid. When it celebrated its silver anniversary, it had close to 1,200 stores and sales were past the $15 billion mark.
In 1985, Forbes Magazine named Walton as the richest man in America with a net worth estimated at $2.8 billion. Despite his stature, Walton remained modest who preferred to drive a pick-up truck instead of limousines.
Before the turn of the new decade, Wal-Mart had overtaken Kmart as the most profitable retailer in the country. It was only natural for the company to look beyond America. Soon enough, it opened an international Wal-Mart store in Mexico City. More stores were then opened in countries like Argentina, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom.
