Target pharmacy is part of the Target Corporation, the second largest discount retailer in the United States. Target Corporation was founded in 1902 by George Dayton, a native of New York who was also a banker and real estate investor.
Making use of a land he bought on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, Dayton formed the Dayton Dry Goods Company, the forerunner of today’s Target Corporation. He would then become a partner in the fourth largest department store in the city, Goodfellow’s Dry Goods Company.

Target Growth and Development
It would only be in the 50s when the company expanded to the suburbs of Minneapolis. In 1956, Dayton expanded to the suburbs of the state with the first fully enclosed shopping center in the United States, Southdale Mall.
In a way, Southdale changed the landscape of the retail industry when top competitors did business under the same roof. It was unheard of that time, yet the stores made a lot of money as busy shoppers went to the mall regularly.
Eventually, three more shopping centers that were akin to Southdale were opened up. These include shopping centers in Brookdale, Rosedale, and Rigdale, all located within the Minneapolis area.
In 1962, the first Target store was opened in Roseville, MN. The retail discount store was such a hit that by the end of the year, more locations were put up in Duluth, Crystal, and St. Louis Park in MN.
In 1966, Target opened its first store outside of the Minnesota area by putting up a location in Denver. Before the end of the decade, more stores were opened in the cities of St, Louis, Dallas, and Houston.
The company then merged with the J.L. Hudson Company based in Detroit to form the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The merger resulted into the establishment of one of the 15 biggest non-food retailers in the country.
Target stores would continue to expand that by 1975, it was the top revenue earner of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. Four years later, Target would reach the $1 billion annual sales mark.
In 2000, Dayton-Hudson Corporation was renamed Target Corporation.
