Costco History
As you may know, Costco is the largest membership warehouse club chain in the U.S. It also happens to be the second largest retailer in the country, and the third largest in the world.
You can find almost everything at Costco warehouses. From food products like meat, dairy, seafood, baked goods to house items like home appliances, home electronics, furniture, to electronics to jewelry to tire to solar panels, Costco has everyhing you need.
Costco has more than 600 locations, with retail outlets located in the U.S., Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Spain.
The first Costco location was under the Price Club brand and opened in 1976 in San Diego. It was small and humble, with its location in a converted airplane hangar. It catered mainly to small businesses.
The first year of operations was not exactly smooth sailing for the enterprising duo of Sol and Robert Price. They lost $750,000 in the first year. However, things turned around in the following months that by 1979, Price Club had two locations, 900 employees, and more importantly a profit of $1 million.
Costco Growth and Development
In 1980, the company went public. Two years later, the first Costco warehouse was opened in Seattle, Washington. That warehouse would be the first of many Costco outlets, growing a business that would soon merge with the Price Club and give rise to the present-day Costco.
Price Club remained thriving in the 80s. In 1985, Price Club sales went past the $1 billion mark. It was named the best managed company in the U.S. by the prestigious Forbes Magazine in 1986, and opened its first optical lab in 1987. By that time, Price Club had 22 locations with more than 3 million members and more than 7,000 employees.
In 1993, Costco and Price merged, forming the present-day Costco. Soon, the company was expanding its operations overseas with warehouses in England and Korea. In 1995, the 200th location was opened in Washington while the first gas station was inaugurated in Tucson, Arizona.
In 1997, the company officially changed its name to Costco Companies, Inc. It also offered an exclusive membership and then expanded further east with a branch in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Another Asian outlet, this time in Hisayama, Japan, was launched several months later.
The following year, its website www.costco.com went online to bring Costco prices and services to the World Wide Web. In 2008, Costco opened an outlet in Sydney, Australia. More outlets in the country were opened, particularly in Auburn, Canberra, and Melbourne.
Achievements
Costco is the first company to have grown its sales from zero to $3 billion in less than six years. In 2008, it was named by the American Customer Satisfaction Index as the number one specialty retail store in the United States.
Most recently, Costco placed 19th on the prestigious Fortune 500 list published in 2014.
Costco Flu Shot Information
Many Costco warehouses have pharmacies where Costco flu shots are administered by licensed pharmacists. To find a Costco warehouse near you where you can get vaccinated against the flu virus, simply go to the company’s official website.
Or you can go directly to the flu immunization program webpage here.
The page lists down all the vaccines offered by Costco pharmacies, including the rates. You can then find a Costco warehouse near you by clicking on the Costco Pharmacy link on the same webpage.
The browser will then re-direct you to a warehouse locator, where you simply key in your ZIP code or the city where you are located. Once you have spotted a Costco warehouse that is nearest your home, check if the said warehouse has pharmacy services.
Take note of the business hours of the pharmacy, as well as its contact details. You can then contact the pharmacy of the Costco warehouse near your home and inquire about the details of its flu shots program. You also don’t have to be a member of Costco warehouse to get flu shots.
Unlike other pharmacy chains, you don’t need to set up an appointment with a Costco pharmacist to have yourself vaccinated against the flu virus. Simply come to the Costco store during regular pharmacy hours. Of course, it won’t hurt if you give the store near you a ring before heading out just to make sure that there is a pharmacist who can administer the flu shot.
