When the U.S. government passed a law that fixed a minimum retail price on most products, Rite Aid was born. The first Rite Aid drug store was established in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1962. It was originally known as Thrift D Discount Center.
Its founder, Alex Grass, earlier incorporated Rack Rite Distributors Inc. in 1958 to provide health and beauty products to grocery stores. By Christmas of 1962, Thrift D Discount Center was taking in $25,000 in income each week. Its sales performance was so impressive that it pulled in $750,000 in its first year, triple the projected sales of $250,000.
Because of the tremendous support it had from the public, the company opened five more drug stores and expanded its market to New York. The next year, it reached Virginia and New Jersey. Its network of stores reached 12, and employee count had risen to 200. By 1965, it had 25 stores.
In 1968, the company’s name was changed to Rite Aid Corporation. It was also during that time that the company made its first public offering, trading on the American Stock Exchange. It then moved to the New York Stock Exchange in 1970.

Before the turn of the century, the company had turned to the West Coast for its expansion with the acquisitions of Thrifty PayLess and K&B Incorporated which added more than 1,000 stores to its network.
